Buffalo Ridge

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is situated in the Madikwe Game Reserve, one of the few malaria-free reserves in southern Africa. The Reserve is in South Africa along the Botswana border, twenty kilometres from Gaberone and lies within a transition region between lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari thornveld. Consequently, the region hosts an incredible diversity of species from both eco-systems. Reach here by a four hour drive or 45-minute flight from Johannesburg. Geographically, the region has enormous volcanic intrusions known as Inselbergs, which are prominent throughout and create a spectacular backdrop to the reserve. Buffalo Ridge was the first 100% community-owned safari camp in South Africa. The lodge is an ecotourism partnership contributing to the unique atmosphere at Buffalo Ridge.

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge has an exclusive but friendly atmosphere with eight thatched suites. Each positioned on the ridge and designed around the breath-taking views. The chalets are decorated in traditional muted African tones and each has a viewing deck, with long views across Madikwe’s stunning landscape. The suites have sliding patio doors and an outdoor shower on the deck, linking the lodge with the bushveld. The central lodge sits on the slopes of a hill across a ravine, separating it from the suites or chalets. There are two decks on which to drink a sundowner and survey the wildlife on the plains below, a tranquil lounge area, the dining area and a swimming pool.

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to a tremendous diversity of fauna and flora, including both the black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. The lodge is a superb open vehicle safari destination where guests are accompanied by well-trained and informative rangers who are able to interpret the many encounters whilst on safari. Cultural interactions are unique here - known as Balete, the owners of Buffalo Ridge live in the village of Lekgophung, just west of Madikwe. Your guides are from the village.
