Nkwichi Lodge Lake Niassa Mozambique

An inland hidden gem with superb snorkelling and birding

Crystal clear waters, deserted beaches and a sky full of stars - Lake Niassa might just be Africa's best kept secret

Mozambicans describe Lake Niassa as Fin do Mundo - the end of the world - and it's easy to see why. Often overlooked by tourists and locals alike, Lake Niassa is an unspoiled African wonderland, far off the beaten track yet still easily accessible for the adventurous traveller. Hidden away in the northern province of Niassa, on the border between Mozambique and Malawi, this wild beach paradise is quiet, undeveloped and is great to combine with the rugged Niassa Reserve for some bush exploration.

You might know Lake Niassa better as 'Lake Malawi' - they are one and the same - and about 25% of the lake waters lay in Mozambique. It's the third largest lake in Africa and much of it is surrounded by the imposing Rift Valley Mountains. If you're into snorkelling, swimming, canoeing, hiking or birds, then this is the place for you. You might even find Nemo here - there are over 500 species of fish, 350 of which are endemic to Lake Niassa. On foot visitors can have picnics in secluded sandy coves, visit local communities, and marvel at the giant baobabs lining the lake.

Whilst remote, Lake Niassa is relatively simply to reach, with a flight to Lichinga airport and then a transfer, part of which may be by boat because there are few roads in the area. Which makes it all the more special. Accommodation is similar to that of Malawi, with eco-lodges and bamboo cabins along the lake shores. Perfect for getting away from it all and enjoying pristine beach wilderness miles away from the ocean. If that isn't a unique holiday, we don't know what is!
