Gheralta Lodge

One of the country’s most sought-after properties, this remote lodge offers easy access to the fascinating and little-known rock churches of the magnificent Gheralta mountains, which, at first glance, bring to mind images of Arizona. Run by Enrika and Silvio Rizzotti, this highly praised lodge is set in tranquil, 10 ha grounds with splendid views of the Gheralta Mountains near the town of Hawzen (about 2 hours from Mek’ele and about four – five hours from Axum).

The accommodation consists of solid, low-lying, stone bungalows with very comfortable, neat and airy rooms and en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are decorated in traditional Tigrayan style and blend well into the countryside. Delicious meals are served in the restaurant; much of the produce originates in the lodge’s vegetable garden. The home-made Tej (honey wine) is recommended.

Gheralta Lodge is surrounded by majestic scenery and fascinating history and the staff are happy to provide an itinerary based on your preferred excursions, including climbing the historic rock churches. (Some of the climbs do require a reasonable level of fitness and surety of foot).
