Paradise Lodge

Arba Minch is generally regarded as a 'gateway town' to Southern Ethiopia. Many people visiting the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region make use of Arba Minch airport, from where regular flights are operated to the capital. Most include at least one overnight stay at Paradise Lodge, a large and comfortable establishment perched on the lip of a wide, densely forested gorge. The lodge is well located for those keen to do boat trips on nearby Lake Chamo in the hitherto poorly explored Nech'Sar National Park and it is not too far from Konso (95km).

When the lodge was opened in 2008 its proprietors recognised the value of the very strong cultural identity of the 54 ethnic groups in what is one of the most fascinating of Ethiopia’s nine regions. The design of the bungalows (known as tukuls), hand-made furniture, linen and other finishes all reflect the influence of the permanently resident communities. Each room is constructed of stone and bamboo with a thatched roof, in traditional Gamo style. All tukuls have an outdoor veranda with garden views or stunning views over a densely forested gorge or of the Rift Valley lakes. Each has an en-suite bathroom with shower; mosquito netting, reading desk and minibar. There is a large, open-air restaurant, part of which is on a spacious deck by the swimming pool. Meals are excellent, with a varied menu – the lodge has its own farm where much of its produce is cultivated. The ATMs/ cash-machines you will see at reception are likely the last ones which visitors will encounter on their journeys to Southern Ethiopia, so come in handy.

Paradise Lodge has partnered up with governmental, local and international organisations to create positive change in the Arba Minch area. Most of its approximately 260 staff originate from the region. Construction was completed by local artisans and contractors. When the property was built, care was taken to plant indigenous species in the grounds. Activities at the lodge include sightseeing, cultural visits, boat trips (Lake Chamo, Nech'Sar National Park) and bird watching.
