Lugenda Wilderness Camp

At 22,000km squared, the Niassa Wildlife Reserve covers nearly one third of the Niassa Province in northern Mozambique. Along with the buffer area of 20,000km² the total region is twice the size of Kruger National Park in South Africa. With that in mind, the Lugenda Wilderness Camp is a difficult place to get to, but so worth the effort! The best way to travel is by light aircraft from Pemba airport – only the hardiest of travellers should contemplate driving.

The accommodation consists of eight luxury tents which have been situated a little way back from the banks of the Lugenda River. Each tent has its own patio deck with great views of the wild surroundings – and the occasional wild elephant attracted by the fig trees close by! The tents have a solid structure and offer every modern comfort - from king-size beds to en-suite bathrooms with power shower. The main building has a lounge, dining area and self-service bar, with a pool directly in front.

The comfortable, relaxed atmosphere at Lugenda Wilderness Camp embodies the spirit of the Mozambique wilderness. Qualified guides can take you on game drives to see such wildlife as impala, hippo, lions and elephants among much else. The bird life is also abundant with over 370 different species having been identified along the Rovuma River area. You can also choose to spend time simply relaxing in the camp pool overlooking the river and unwinding during the heat of the day. The camp is generally open from May to December to avoid the rainy season.
