Sanctuary Crater Camp

A beautiful lodge situated in the Ngorongoro Crater rim valley.
NgorongoroTanzania· 10 Rooms · $$

Nestled in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with outstanding access to the crater floor.

Sanctuary Crater Camp is a comfortable 10 bed camp offering unrivalled access to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for early morning safaris.

Location: Sanctuary Crater Camp is set on the rim-side of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just a few minutes' drive from the main descent road into the crater itself. That proximity is one of its biggest draws - staying here means you can be among the first vehicles on the crater floor in the morning, well ahead of the day trippers coming in from further afield. The camp is tucked into a glade of acacia trees, with views of the surrounding highlands and a sense of seclusion that's welcome after a day of exploring. It's a location that offers both unbeatable access and a peaceful, unfussy atmosphere at the end of the day.

Rooms: There are just ten classic safari tents at Sanctuary Crater Camp, each comfortably furnished with large beds, proper linens, an en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers and flush loos. The tents are generously sized, with a small veranda out front and warm touches like writing desks, patterned throws, and traditional furniture. It's not about over the top luxury - this is more of a nod to odd-school safari style - but the attention to detail and comfort is spot on. It feels authentic, welcoming, and just the right side of rustic for such an iconic setting.

Amenities: The camp has a relaxed, low-key feel, with a central dining and lounge area under canvas where guests come together for meals and evening drinks. Meals are three-course hearty, with a mix of international and locally inspired dishes, and there's a campfire set up each evening for sharing stories about your day under the stars. You won't find a pool or spa here - that's not what this camp is about - but what it lacks in bells and whistles, it makes up for in charm, character, and an unbeatable location. Wi-Fi is available in the main area, but you're encourage to unplug and soak up the surroundings.

Activities: The main event here is, of course, the Ngorongoro Crater - and Sanctuary Crater Camp is perfectly placed for early access. Game drives into the crater are led by expert guides in custom 4x4s, offering a chance to spot everything from elephants and lions to flamingos and (with luck) rhinos, all within the dramatic caldera walls. Drives are unhurried and immersive, with picnic breakfasts or lunches often set in scenic spots. Because of the camp's location just outside the crater rim, you can also explore the surrounding highlands, visit local Maasai communities, or take guided walks in the nearby forests when time allows.

Sustainability: Sanctuary Retreats, who run the camp, have a strong focus on responsible tourism through their philanthropic arm, Sanctuary Retreats Philanthropy. At Crater Camp, that means using solar power for lighting and charging, managing water and waste thoughtfully, and sourcing as much produce locally as possible. The team works closely with nearby communities on health and education initiatives, and employs local staff who bring a genuine sense of hospitality and connection to the guest experience. it's a small, low-impact camp with a light footprint, but one that plays a meaningful role in the region's longer-term sustainability.

January

January is mixed when it comes to weather, temperatures rise whilst the chance of rain and humidity increases. It is still a good time to go, as the rates are lower yet the game viewing is still excellent.

  • During this time migratory herds are in the Serengeti for calving season, meaning the Ndutu plains are busy.

February

The weather remains hot with a chance of rain in February.

  • Meanwhile in the Ndutu Plains the migration is still occurring.

March

March is the calm before the storm, before heavy rains and humidity builds. Visitors can take great advantage of lower rates during the low season.

  • Migrating herds start to leave Ndutu, heading West towards Grumeti.

April

April experiences continued periods of heavy rain, we would advise against travel due to the conditions.

May

During may there is periods of heavy rain, we would advise against travel due to the conditions.

June

June heralds the wet season, bringing lush green vegetation which can make spotting game more difficult. It is a particularly great time for birders as parks become populated by migratory birds especially in the South.

  • Migration is still in the Grumeti area, heading north.

July

July is the start of peak season, temperatures reach up to 30 degrees and the surrounding land becomes drier and spotting game is becoming easier.

  • The migration is in the Northern Serengeti moving towards Kenya.

August

August is peak season, with bush land drying out game spotting becomes much easier. If you want to experience Tanzania game at its best, August is the time to travel.

  • The migration still remains in the north.

September

Peak season continues in September, the Northern circuit can be very busy, if you want to avoid crowds it's best to visit the southern parks.

  • The end of the migration is still in the north with herds on both side of the Kenyan and Tanzanian borders.

October

Peak season continues into October with good game viewing in the Serengeti and southern parks.

  • The migration has now crossed over into Kenya.

November

November is the start of the rainy season, the rains tend to be overnight so it is still a popular time to travel. During this month you can take advantage of low season rates.

  • Migration crossing over into the Serengeti can be seen a the Tanzania and Kenya border.

December

Rains continue in December, whilst the temperature and humidity start to build. Venturing out on safari is generally good, with large game still easily spotted.

  • Migrating herds in the north travel south back to Ndutu.
