Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat

One of the tiniest pristine Islands of natural beauty in the Maldives
The MaldivesIndian Ocean· 30 Rooms · $$

Located in the South Ari Atoll

This simple island promises to be your ultimate escape

Location
Set in the South Ari Atoll of The Maldives, Drift Thelu Veliga is about a 35-minute seaplane flight from Malé. This atoll is famous for its extraordinary marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, and pristine coral reefs. The island itself is tiny, giving you the sense of being far away from everything, while still enjoying the comfort of a thoughtfully run resort.

Rooms
There are just 30 villas here, keeping the atmosphere wonderfully private. Beach Villas sit tucked beneath palm trees, opening onto soft sand and shaded decks, while Water Villas stretch into the lagoon with direct steps into the ocean. Each is styled in natural tones, with wood and thatch touches that blend into the surroundings, and outdoor spaces designed for watching the sunset or stargazing in complete peace.

Amenities
The island may be small, but you’ll find everything you need. The open-air restaurant serves fresh Maldivian seafood and international dishes, while the beach bar is perfect for a sundowner. There’s a spa with treatments inspired by island traditions, plus a water sports centre offering paddleboarding, kayaking, and diving.

Activities
This part of the Maldives is a paradise for divers and snorkellers, and Drift Thelu Veliga makes the most of it with daily excursions. You can swim with whale sharks, spot turtles gliding through coral gardens, or join a sunset dolphin cruise. For quieter moments, yoga on the beach or a private sandbank picnic are guest favourites.

Sustainability
The retreat’s philosophy is all about living lightly on the island. Villas are built with natural materials that echo traditional Maldivian style, and the resort takes care to manage waste, reduce plastics, and preserve the fragile reef.

January

January is one of the most popular times to visit the Maldives, with plenty of sunshine and high temperatures its great for a beach holiday - if you love snorkelling and diving the visibility is high thanks to the calm weather conditions.

February

Much like January, temperatures in February stay at a steady 30 degrees, the combination of beautiful weather conditions and good watersports making it a great time to visit, especially if you love sea life.

March

March experiences high temperatures and low humidity levels, making it the perfect time for a beach holiday.

April

April is another great month to travel, with sunny, warm days. During the end of the month there is an increased risk of rain.

May

Temperatures in May remain warm with long periods of sunshine, but with the start of the South West Monsoon season rains and storms are likely. The unsettled weather, means there is lower visibility, so diving and snorkelling isn't as good as previous months.

June

During June, temperatures remain warm with sunny days. With the chances of rain and storms increasing it gives guests a perfect excuse to explore the islands' spas and facilities.

July

The South West Monsoon season continues into July, meaning rains are probable despite the warm sunny days.

August

Weather remains the same in August, and the lower prices and attractive offers make it a great time to visit.

September

Weather remains the same in September, and the lower prices and attractive offers make it a great time to visit.

October

As with preceding months, warm temperatures and sunshine are balanced with increased rain showers and storms. During October is a great time to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they come to feed on the increased plankton in the Indian Ocean.

November

As with preceding months, warm temperatures and sunshine are balanced with increased rain showers and storms. During November is a great time to spot whale sharks and manta rays.

December

Early December can present good value for money before the festive peak, as with previous months the weather can be unpredictable with increasing storms and rain showers.
