When to go to Borneo
A month-by-month guide of when to visit
Planning a trip to Borneo starts with understanding the seasons. This tropical island has distinct wet and dry periods, each offering a different travel experience – from wildlife-filled rainforest treks to quiet cultural encounters. Here’s our take on the best, okay, and less ideal times to visit:
Dry Season (April to September): Best Time to Visit
This is Borneo at its most accessible. Clear skies, lower humidity, and consistent weather make it perfect for jungle treks, canopy walks, and wildlife sightings – particularly in places like the Danum Valley and along the Kinabatangan River. Beaches are in their prime too, with excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling. Expect warm days, active wildlife, and lush green landscapes at their best.
Shoulder Season (February–March & October–November): A Good Alternative
Weather during these months can be more unpredictable, with occasional showers, but it’s still a good time to visit. You’ll find fewer tourists, quieter trails, and fantastic opportunities for birdwatching. The rainforest is especially lush, and wildlife encounters can be just as rewarding – particularly around the Kinabatangan and in coastal reserves.
Wettest Months (December–January): Less Ideal
This is the height of the monsoon season, especially in Sabah and Sarawak. Heavy rain, high humidity, and the potential for flooding can make travel challenging. Outdoor plans are often disrupted, and diving conditions are less favourable. That said, cultural festivals and peaceful, off-peak travel still appeal to some.
If you're after classic wildlife and rainforest adventures, stick to the dry season. But if you’re happy with a bit of rain and fewer crowds, the shoulder months can offer something special too.

January
January falls during Borneo’s wet season, bringing warm, humid days and frequent rain. While downpours can affect some outdoor plans, the rainforest is at its lushest and birdlife is particularly active. It’s also a great time to explore Borneo’s cultural side – from local festivals and crafts to museums and lively food markets on rainy afternoons. If you're happy to travel flexibly, it can be a rewarding and peaceful time to visit.

February
February in Borneo sees the wet season continue, with warm, humid days and regular rainfall, though conditions begin to ease slightly in the north. Despite the showers, this month has its own charm – especially with the celebration of Chap Goh Mei, the Hokkien Chinese Lantern Festival. Expect colourful lanterns, lively street processions, and a chance to experience one of Borneo’s most vibrant cultural traditions. On rainy days, museums, galleries, and indoor markets offer a relaxed way to explore the island’s rich heritage.

March - April
March marks the onset of the dry season in Borneo, providing an ideal climate for outdoor adventures. The weather during this period is pleasantly comfortable, and wildlife becomes more active, giving fantastic opportunities for encounters in the rainforests. It's a time when you can immerse yourself in local traditions and witness vibrant festivities, further enhancing the unique charm of your Borneo experience.

May - June
May and June are some of the best months to visit Borneo and immerse yourself in vibrant local cultures, adding a cultural dimension to your Borneo experience. The weather is great for outdoor activities, and the lush rainforests are ripe for exploration. As May transitions into June, jungle treks and rainforest adventures take centre stage, with wildlife sightings reaching their peak. It's an ideal time to connect with nature, witness the incredible biodiversity of Borneo, and embark on thrilling excursions into the heart of the rainforest.

July - August
July and August are the most popular months to visit Borneo. The warm and dry weather during these months sets the perfect stage for river cruises, allowing you to navigate Borneo's waterways while basking in the sun. It's also an ideal time for market exploration, where you can immerse yourself in local culture and pick up unique souvenirs. As August continues the pleasant conditions, it becomes a prime time for aquatic adventures. The clear waters of Borneo's coastlines are a haven for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. The visibility underwater is excellent, ensuring that you can explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter diverse marine life.

September
In September, Borneo continues to enjoy favourable weather, making it an excellent time for jungle treks and wildlife spotting. The rainforests remain accessible, providing fantastic opportunities to explore their lush depths. Additionally, this month offers a unique chance to visit indigenous communities and partake in local traditions. Immersing yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of Borneo during September can be a deeply enriching experience, as you witness traditional practices and engage with the island's diverse communities, adding a unique cultural dimension to your adventure.

October
October in Borneo marks the end of the dry season, offering pleasant weather with warm temperatures and less humidity. The month is perfect for outdoor activities such as jungle treks in the vibrant rainforest and serene river safaris. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy sightings of orangutans and proboscis monkeys. Borneo's coastal areas present pristine beaches ideal for relaxation or water sports. The clear waters make it an excellent time for snorkelling and scuba diving to explore vibrant coral reefs. Don't miss the opportunity to savour Borneo's diverse local cuisine, featuring dishes like laksa, rendang, and exotic fruits.

November
November in Borneo marks the transition to the wet season with increasing rainfall, creating a unique atmosphere. The weather is warm with moderate humidity, characterised by rain showers interspersed with sunny intervals. While outdoor activities become more challenging, November does offer excellent birdwatching opportunities with rainforest avian species in their element. Additionally, the fewer crowds make for a more intimate exploration, and on rainy days, indoor attractions like museums and art galleries provide a deeper understanding of the island's culture and history.

December
December marks the height of the wet season in Borneo, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak, with heavy rainfall, high humidity, and the occasional storm. Outdoor plans can be affected, and beach conditions are often less ideal, with reduced visibility for snorkelling or diving. That said, this off-peak period offers a quieter, more peaceful side of Borneo. It’s a great time to explore the island’s cultural traditions, with local festivals and celebrations providing a deeper connection to its heritage. For those happy to slow down and take things as they come, December brings a more reflective, authentic view of Borneo.
