Dry Season (April to September): Best Time to Visit
This is Borneo at its most accessible. Clear skies, lower humidity, and consistent weather make it perfect for jungle treks, canopy walks, and wildlife sightings – particularly in places like the Danum Valley and along the Kinabatangan River. Beaches are in their prime too, with excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling. Expect warm days, active wildlife, and lush green landscapes at their best.
Shoulder Season (February–March & October–November): A Good Alternative
Weather during these months can be more unpredictable, with occasional showers, but it’s still a good time to visit. You’ll find fewer tourists, quieter trails, and fantastic opportunities for birdwatching. The rainforest is especially lush, and wildlife encounters can be just as rewarding – particularly around the Kinabatangan and in coastal reserves.
Wettest Months (December–January): Less Ideal
This is the height of the monsoon season, especially in Sabah and Sarawak. Heavy rain, high humidity, and the potential for flooding can make travel challenging. Outdoor plans are often disrupted, and diving conditions are less favourable. That said, cultural festivals and peaceful, off-peak travel still appeal to some.
