Western Australia is the country’s largest state, yet it is overlooked by many, often in favour of New South Wales or Queensland. This journey, however, shows why it deserves just as much attention. From the urban energy of Perth to the tranquillity of Margaret River’s vineyards and surf beaches, and the complete seclusion in Ningaloo Reef, the contrasts are striking and beautifully capture Australia’s diversity.
Our Australia expert Otti says:
“This trip goes to what I consider to be one of Australia's best regions, Margaret River, which produces some of the country’s finest wines, yet because it isn’t right on the doorstep of Sydney or Melbourne, it appears on fewer people's itineraries. Beyond the cellar doors, you’ll find dramatic stretches of coastline with surf beaches and walking trails, as well as incredible limestone caves to explore. It’s a place that rewards those who make the journey.”
What makes this trip truly special is the feeling of remoteness and discovery. Western Australia has landscapes that can feel like the edge of the world, none more so than the pristine stretches of coastline along Ningaloo Reef, famed for the annual visits of whale sharks. It’s a holiday that blends vibrant city life with rural calm and wilderness adventures, offering what we consider to be a potentially more authentic experience of Australia.
After your arrival into Perth, you will be transferred from their airport straight to your city centre hotel, COMO The Treasury. This hotel is located only 450 metres from Elizabeth Quay and less than 2 km from King's Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world. After reaching your hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure for you to either getting to know Perth or relaxing after your journey in the hotel.
Get ready for a day of adventure on Rottnest Island, just a short ferry ride from Perth! As soon as you arrive, your bike will be waiting, giving you the freedom to explore hidden coves, pristine beaches, and scenic trails at your own pace. There are only a handful of cars allowed on the island so cycling is the primary means of transportation! Keep your eyes peeled (you won't have to look too hard, don't worry) for the island’s famously friendly quokkas – these smiling marsupials love posing for selfies and are guaranteed to make your day even more memorable. After a fun-filled day, hop back on the ferry to Perth.
This morning, collect your rental car and set off south from Perth towards Margaret River, a drive of around three hours. If time allows, stop in Fremantle, a lively port city within Perth known for its street art, historic architecture, and bustling markets. Grab a coffee along the ‘Cappuccino Strip’ or enjoy fresh fish and chips at the Fishing Boat Harbour.
Continue along the highway to Bunbury, a coastal town famous for its beaches and wildlife. Stretch your legs at Koombana Bay, explore the town’s street murals, or, in season, swim with dolphins off the beach.
A short detour brings you to Busselton, where the iconic wooden jetty and Underwater Observatory offer a scenic stop before heading into the Margaret River region. Here, Cape Lodge awaits, the perfect base to explore award-winning wineries, artisanal food producers, and dramatic surf beaches at Prevelly.
After breakfast, drive over to the Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the Margaret River region. During your three and a half hour tour, you will see the Leeuwin Art Gallery with some of Australia's most famous contemporary artworks before you begin a wine tasting of some of the estate's finest produce. After lunch at the estate, the afternoon is free for you to either continue exploring the region, visit some other estates, or head back to the hotel to rest by the pool.
This morning is an early start, after breakfast drive out to the Ngilgi Cave Ticket Office, around 10 minutes from your hotel, ready for your morning tour of Ngilgi Caves. However, this tour offers so much more than just caves, listen to a live digeridoo performance, learn how to identify traditional plants, foods and medicines and learn the art of traditional fire lighting. This tour provides you some real inside into Aboriginal Australia, set inside an impressive backdrop.
After a relaxing morning in Margaret River, set off north towards Perth, taking the scenic route along the Bussell Highway. Stop in Busselton to stroll the jetty or visit the Underwater Observatory for a glimpse of local marine life.
Continue towards Dunsborough, a charming coastal town with calm beaches and boutique cafés – perfect for a coffee or lunch break. If time allows, make a detour to Meelup Beach or the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse for panoramic views over the Indian Ocean.
Further north, consider a quick stop in Mandurah, where you can stretch your legs along the canals, watch playful dolphins, or take a short boat cruise. From there, it’s a straightforward drive into Perth, arriving in the city ready to explore its vibrant neighbourhoods, riverside attractions, and dining scene once more.
Today you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight to Exmouth-Learmonth Airport in the north of Western Australia. You will then be taken in a shared transfer to Sal Salis, a luxury tented camp right on the shores surrounding Ningaloo Reef. This camp is the true definition of both immersion and seclusion, as you feel like you are staying alone on the very edge of the world. You will be staying here for three nights on a full board basis.
You have no scheduled activities over these two days, but you have unlimited use of the camp's kayaks, paddle boarding and snorkelling gear to either use at your leisure or on one of their daily guided activities. At the lodge, there is no mobile or internet connection, so for two days, you can relax completely, cut off from the outside world, and free to explore the wonders of Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park.
After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Exmouth-Learmonth Airport in plenty of time for your return flight back to Perth, ready to reconnect with the wider world again. Time to return home with incredible memories of one of the coolest parts of Australia!

I have just returned from the most amazing trip to Tanzania, booked with Far & Wild. Everything went so smoothly from the first time I spoke with them. The planning was great, the itinerary was perfect for us, and the lodges were amazing. We spent 10 nights with an amazing guide, travelling through Northern Tanzania and even got to see the migration, which was a lifetime ambition of mine. This wasn't our first safari, so we were nervous as to how it would compare, but it was spot on. We're particularly grateful that she suggested a private 'bush lunch' in the Ngorongoro Crater as the public picnic spot was very busy! I will certainly be using them again to book our next trip....we're thinking of a relaxing beach stay next time to get over the excitement of safari!
Just back from another amazing F&W organised trip to Namibia with the family (8 adults). Having been there before, Alistair tailored our trip to include our favourite locations and added a new one for us, Okonjima Plains camp, which we loved. The quality of accommodation and guiding, activities, food and drinks was exceptional throughout. Although not inexpensive I felt it was good value for the level of luxury we had. Kwessi Dunes, Shipwreck lodge, Ongava, Okonjima with pit stops Windhoek (city tour recommended ), Swakopmund (Sandwich Harbour and Walvis Bay tour) and Grootberg lodge (best sundowner drive )
We had a wonderful trip to São Tomé and Príncipe - a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea with paradise (almost empty) beaches and jungle forest. It was all well organised by Far and Wild and we stayed at Omali lodge at Sao Tome, then on Roca Sundy, and Sunday Praia at Principe - a great combination of different types of resorts/hotels. Omali is close to Sao Tome town with its colonial buildings, markets, hustle and bustle. Roca Sunday gives an old plantation experience and Sundy Praia a luxury beach experience. Very friendly (from time to time a bit slow) service, great fresh food, specifically if you like fish/seafood, vegetables and fruits (almost all sourced locally). Nice temperature between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius, nice swimming conditions. We really recommend this for those who want to experience a pristine destination with few other tourists and friendly and welcoming people. The islands also feel (and I believe are) very safe. At Principe, there are no dangerous animals, snakes or whatever, and it was great to be able to hike in the jungle without being very conscious of where to put your hands and feet. Go before everyone else does!
Back home again, basking in the joys of a superb safari. Every aspect you arranged for us, including linking up with Mack Air and Wild Horizons locally to transport us. The choice of camps, Camp Hwange in Zimbabwe and Muchenenje Safari Lodge in Botswana, was spot on and exactly what we had hoped for - ideally situated, comfortable, in good surroundings, and with excellent wildlife on the doorstep and throughout the wider country. The service staff in each looked after us very well, catering was excellent, and the game guides were professional, knowledgeable and helpful. The weather was, as usual for that part of the world, also good at the time of our visit. Blue skies and stunning sunsets. Warm but not too hot during the day, although quite cold at sunrise when viewing game. The viewing started. You made us happy, and we recommend you to similar safari enthusiasts with confidence.
Far and Wild went above and beyond to make sure my trip to Zambia was special. I would definitely recommend them and their services to anyone wanting to travel to Africa.
Lovely holiday at the amazing Almanara on Galu beach, a beach like no other. Far and Wild excelled themselves from beginning to end of our holiday in beautiful Kenya.... What a country!,
Wow! These guys are amazing. Can’t recommend them highly enough. Friendly AND efficient! Sorted out our trip (last minute and lots of different family member needs, sorry!) in record time and everything worked like clockwork. Trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara. Will be back (and use F&W again!)!
It was a dreamy holiday on the Kenyan Coast - Far and Wild, their efficiency and professionalism allowed us to relax and be the happiest family alive !! We cannot fault them, their care and understanding of what we wanted from a holiday ensured we had the most memorable trip. We will be booking with them again for sure!
