Location
Perched on a private headland near Karongi, Kivu Lodge has the feel of a secluded retreat, yet it’s surprisingly easy to reach. You can arrive by road, boat, or even by helicopter from Kigali.

Rooms
The 20 stone-built cottages are simple but spacious, with private terraces that open onto sweeping lake views. Interiors are unfussy and comfortable with high ceilings, soft lighting, and all the essentials. Guests love the quiet, the stillness, and the feeling of waking to mist rising off the lake.

Amenities
There’s a lovely infinity pool that seems to melt into the lake, plus a relaxed restaurant and open-sided bar for lazy lunches or sundowners. We love the evening campfire by the water, great for stargazing and sharing stories after dinner.

Activities
Take a sunset cruise on the lodge’s private boat, visit nearby coffee farms, or hike into the green hills beyond. You can explore by kayak, fish in the lake, or join a local dance performance. There’s also the option to head into Nyungwe Forest or visit local cultural sites if you’d like to go deeper.

Sustainability
Kivu Lodge was built with care to preserve the land and support the surrounding communities. The team hires extensively from surrounding communities in Karongi, supporting local livelihoods through hospitality training and purchasing fresh produce from nearby coffee and tea plantations.
