Lake Kivu

The Beautiful Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu Safaris

Where fishermen still fish in dugout canoes unchanged in design for centuries

Pretty towns and villages with fading façades roll down to the lake edge

Rwanda’s largest lake, and the sixth largest lake in Africa

Lake Kivu is Rwanda's laid-back secret - a beautiful, glassy expanse of water fringed by rolling hills, small fishing villages, and sandy shores. It's where you go to slow the pace after gorilla trekking or forest hiking, and just breathe it all in. The lake is vast (one of Africa's Great Lakes), but the vibe is intimate - think golden sunsets, gentle boat rides, and warm evening air.

If you are putting together a wider Rwandan adventure, Lake Kivu is the perfect pause - a soft landing between the intensity of the forests and the open savannahs. It's not a safari destination as such, but that is part of the charm. This is your moment to unwind, unplug, and just enjoy the scenery.

Lake Kivu stretches along the western edge of Rwanda, forming a natural border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main Rwandan towns along the lake are Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu - each with its own personality. The road that runs along the lakeshore between these town is one of the most scenic drives in East Africa. You can travel it overland with a driver-guide, or in some sections by boat.

It's not just about the views( although they are stunning). What sets Lake Kivu apart is the mood. There is no rush, no pressure to do anything fast. You are surrounded by gentle hills, tiny islands, and water that reflects the sky like a mirror. It's beautiful, but in a low-key easygoing kind of way.

Unlike many lakes in East Africa, Lake Kivu is free of hippos and crocodiles so you can actually swim - safely and comfortably. The water is warm and clean, and there is nothing quite like a sunset swim after a day's travel.

It is also rich in culture and local life. You will see fishermen setting out in dusk in traditional tri-hulled boats, their songs drifting across the water. The towns are lively but relaxed, with markets, cafés, and little guesthouses that give you a glimpse into everyday Rwandan life.

A must-do on Lake Kivu is a boat trip. Whether you take a short trip around the nearby islands or a longer journey between towns, being on the water is part of the Lake Kivu experience. Highlights include, Napoleon Island and Amahoro Island, which are great for birdlife and gentle walks. As well as coffee tours on Nyamirundi Island where you can see how Rwanda's rich arabica beans go from plant to cup, with plenty of tasting along the way.

The lake's calm bays are also perfect for a dip, especially in the mornings or late afternoons when the light is soft. Kayaks can also be hired in several spots, and gliding over the water is a peaceful way to explore.

The Congo Nile Trail runs for 227km along the lake's edge - a multi-day hike or bike route that takes you through local villages, forests, and tea plantations. You don't need to do the whole thing - we can arrange short, guided sections that give you a feel for the landscapes and local culture without need to go full expedition.

Lake Kivu is the ideal place to slow the pace for a day or two. Whether you are breaking up a longer journey, easing into the rhythm of Rwandan life, or simply looking for a peaceful spot with great views and fresh air, it fits the bill.
