The Avenue of the Baobabs is one of Madagascar’s most photographed and unforgettable sights. Just north of Morondava on the island’s west coast, this natural corridor of towering baobab trees lines a dusty track through the dry countryside – a surreal, almost prehistoric landscape that feels both grand and deeply peaceful.
These giant Grandidier’s baobabs, some over 800 years old, rise up to 30 metres tall, their thick trunks silhouetted dramatically against the sky. They were once part of a dense forest, but as the surrounding trees were cleared for agriculture, the baobabs remained, now standing like sentinels in the open landscape.
The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and golden and the shadows stretch long across the ground. Sunset, in particular, is magical – a chance to watch the colours shift while locals cycle past and children play nearby.
What we love about the Avenue of the Baobabs is not just its visual impact, but its stillness. It’s a place that makes you pause. Simple, majestic, and uniquely Malagasy, it captures the spirit of the island in a single, unforgettable scene.
