Certified by Fair Trade Tourism in its commitment to sustainable, nature-based tourism
Location:
Set within the dry deciduous forest of Marofandilia, around 44 km north of Morondava, Camp Amoureux is a simple but well run eco-camp. It’s just 20 minutes by road from Kirindy Forest Reserve and close to the iconic Allée des Baobabs, making it an ideal base for exploring this wildlife-rich region of western Madagascar.
Rooms:
The camp offers 14 en-suite tented rooms, which were recently refurbished in 2024, each raised on a wooden platform and shaded by a thatched roof. Interiors are simple but well kept, with mosquito nets provided. Set beneath a canopy of trees, each tent blends seamlessly into the surrounding natural environment, offering a peaceful, close-to-the-wild atmosphere.
Amenities:
At the heart of the camp is a creatively designed, open-air restaurant topped with a small lounge. The laid-back communal spaces are perfect for winding down after forest walks. The facilities are generally basic, but they’re well maintained while still aligning with the camp’s low-impact ethos.
Activities:
Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for rare species such as the Fosa, the Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat and the Flat-tailed Tortoise. Visits to Kirindy Forest and the nearby baobab avenue are key highlights.
Sustainability:
Managed by NGO FANAMBY, the Malagasy arm of Conservation International, Camp Amoureux is certified by Fair Trade Tourism and operates under the ‘Friendly Camp’ brand. Local communities are actively involved in its management, making it a strong example of conservation-led, community-based tourism in Madagascar.
