Undiscovered and unusual India
A unique corner of India where you'll discover majestic waterfalls, a slice of Scotland, and even a Bob Marley festival
In Shillong you are well off the tourist trail, and up here a lot of your assumptions about India are turned upside down. Women are in charge, and property passes from mother to daughter. Bob Dylan and Bob Marley’s birthdays are celebrated as festivals. The weather is not hot, and you are close to the rainiest place on earth where clouds roll down the street and sit at the bottom of valleys.
And somehow it feels familiar. Shillong, the “Scotland of the East”, was at one time a British hill station, and is a lovely town to spend a few days in on a tour of North East India.
While here be sure to try the unique local cuisine, chew some kwai (you’ll see), and gamble on archery in the local traditional game of “Forecast”.
Further out in the state of Meghalaya you can see the magnificent waterfalls at Cherapunjee, and explore the living root bridges woven across forest streams.
