Mount Fuji (or Fuji-san if you prefer) is a national icon, a cultural touchstone, and one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Japan. Towering over the landscape at 3,776 metres, Fuji-san draws visitors year-round with its graceful symmetry and ever-changing beauty.

On clear days, you can spot its snow-dusted peak from as far away as Tokyo, but it’s even more impressive up close. In summer, the surrounding greenery brings out the contrast of the summit; in winter, its white crown feels almost otherworldly. It’s no wonder artists and poets have been inspired by it for centuries.

If you're feeling adventurous, climbing Mount Fuji is an experience that you will never forget. The official season runs from July to mid-September, when the trails are open and mountain huts are in operation. Reaching the summit to watch the sunrise — known as goraiko — is one of those rare, quiet moments that feel both epic and intimate.

You don’t have to climb it to enjoy it, though. The Fuji Five Lakes region at the base is a brilliant alternative. Lake Kawaguchi is especially scenic — think reflection-perfect views, relaxed boat rides, and hot spring hotels with front-row seats to Fuji itself.

Nearby, Hakone makes a great add-on, with cable cars, lake cruises, and art museums dotted between forests and steaming onsen. It’s all part of the Fuji experience — striking, serene, and surprisingly easy to reach from Tokyo.
