Exploring the Enchanting East Coast
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is a tropical paradise featuring flawless beaches, abundant rainforests, and vibrant wildlife; a region that offers a fascinating blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences.
Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast has a rhythm all of its own. With its Afro-Caribbean roots, laid-back towns, and untamed beaches, this side of the country feels different to the Pacific, less polished, more free-spirited, and full of character.
What we love about the Caribbean coast is the blend of cultures and natural beauty. Base yourself around Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and you’ll find reggae music drifting from beach bars, open-air cafés serving spicy coconut curries, and bikes zipping down palm-lined roads. It’s colourful, lively, and refreshingly unhurried.
The beaches here are stunning, some are wild and windswept, others are calm and perfect for swimming or snorkelling. Playa Cocles is great for surfing, while Playa Punta Uva offers gentler waters and a more relaxed feel. Just inland, the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and Cahuita National Park are brilliant for wildlife walks, with sloths, monkeys, raccoons, and brilliant birdlife often seen close to the trails.
We recommend slowing down here. Rent a bike, explore small local villages, take a cacao tour, and soak up the warm, easygoing vibe. It’s an ideal place to round off a trip, especially if you’re looking for a more offbeat beach experience. The Caribbean coast is all about atmosphere, authenticity, and natural charm.
