An Adventurer's Paradise
Take on white-water rapids, discover ancient ruins, and witness extraordinary natural beauty.
For those looking to step off the usual tourist trail, Turrialba and the nearby Pacuare River offer a wilder, more rugged side of Costa Rica. This is a region of lush valleys, smoking volcanoes, and thick rainforest, where adventure and nature come together in the most spectacular way.
What we love about Turrialba is its untamed feel. It's quieter than the more famous central highlands but just as rich in scenery and wildlife. The town itself is laid-back and surrounded by dairy farms, archaeological sites, and hiking trails. Nearby, you’ll find the dramatic Turrialba Volcano, which (when safe) can be viewed from lookouts offering sweeping views across the valley.
The real draw here, though, is the Pacuare River. Known as one of the world’s best white-water rafting spots, it’s not just about the adrenaline, although the rapids are thrilling, it’s also about the journey. Rafting into a remote jungle lodge, accessible only by river, is one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had in Costa Rica. Along the way, expect waterfalls, deep forest canyons, and the chance to spot toucans and monkeys overhead.
If you’re up for an adventure with real payoff, this part of the country delivers. It’s active, scenic, and wonderfully remote.
