Golden sands and winding forest trails

Abel Tasman National Park, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, is known for its golden beaches, native forests, and crystal-clear waters. The park is ideal for walking, kayaking, and wildlife spotting, offering a mix of adventure and relaxation. Its combination of coastal and forest landscapes makes it one of the country’s most accessible and rewarding outdoor destinations.
Abel Tasman tours
Abel Tasman National Park, on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, is a haven for walkers, kayakers, and beach lovers. Its famous Abel Tasman Coast Track stretches for 60 kilometres, weaving through native forest, across suspension bridges, and along golden-sand beaches. Many visitors also explore the park by kayak or small boat, gliding between sheltered coves and turquoise bays that feel wonderfully untouched.
Wildlife in Abel Tasman National Park
The park is perfect for a wildlife holiday to New Zealand. On land, you may spot native birdlife such as tui and fantails flitting through the forest. Along the coast, fur seals bask on rocky outcrops, while dolphins and little blue penguins are often seen in the water. The marine environment makes Abel Tasman particularly rewarding for those combining walking with time on the water.
Abel Tasman accommodation
One of our favourite places to stay is Awaroa Lodge, nestled deep in the park and only accessible by boat from Kaiteriteri. With its beachfront setting and relaxed atmosphere, it offers the perfect base for enjoying the park’s trails and coastline at a slower pace.
Best time to visit Abel Tasman
The summer months of December to March are the best time to visit Abel Tasman, with long days for walking and warm weather for swimming and kayaking. Spring and autumn can also be beautiful, with fewer visitors and mild conditions.
