Australia's Spiritual Heartland
Discover the Northern Territory’s ancient aboriginal history, alongside its immense and iconic landscapes.
The Northern Territory is defined by its extremes, tropical coastlines and lush wetlands in the north, arid red deserts and towering rock formations in the south. It covers a vast, sparsely populated area, yet holds a rich cultural and geological legacy. Aboriginal culture in this part of Australia is among the oldest in the world, with traditions, rock art, and stories stretching back more than forty thousand years.
From rugged national parks to sacred sites, this is a place where the connection between land, people, and history runs deep. Below are some of our favourite destinations within the Northern Territory:
Uluru
Uluru is a monumental sandstone monolith that rises 348 metres above the desert and is sacred to the Anangu people. Its colours shift with the light, most dramatically at dawn and dusk. Guided walks and cultural tours reveal rock art, sacred sites, and the Dreamtime stories that connect Uluru to the surrounding landscape.
The Olgas (Kata Tjuta)
A striking collection of 36 domed rock formations, Kata Tjuta is as culturally significant as Uluru. Walking trails like the Valley of the Winds lead through soaring gorges and rugged terrain, offering unforgettable views of this ancient, weathered landscape.
Darwin and Kakadu
Darwin and Kakadu National Park are both definitely worth a visit. Darwin is the NT’s laid-back tropical capital, where you will find Asian and Australian influences in its food, culture, and markets. Just a few hours away, Kakadu National Park offers vast floodplains, ancient rock art galleries, and rich biodiversity, from saltwater crocodiles to migratory birds, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arnhem Land
Remote and wild, Arnhem Land is a stronghold of Aboriginal culture and pristine nature. Access is restricted and very off-the-beaten track, making visits a privilege. Here, visitors can experience traditional art, storytelling, and customs, alongside spectacular coastlines, wetlands, and escarpments.
Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge
Carved by the Katherine River through ancient sandstone, Nitmiluk Gorge is made up of 13 dramatic chasms. Visitors can explore by boat, kayak, or hiking trail, taking in towering cliffs, waterfalls, and natural swimming holes. It’s a natural showcase of the Top End’s beauty.
