Rustic comfort in the beautiful South Luangwa bush
Location
Hidden away on the banks of the seasonal Mwamba River in South Luangwa National Park, and surrounded by towering ebony trees and golden grasslands, Mwamba Bush Camp is a truly remote slice of the bush, perfect if you’re looking to unplug and fully immerse yourself in the wild.
Rooms
The chalets here are beautifully simple and incredibly atmospheric. Built from natural materials and open to the breeze, each one has a skylight above the bed so you can fall asleep under the stars. You’ll have your own open-air en-suite bathroom, complete with a hot bucket shower and flush loo.
Amenities
The central lounge and dining area sit in the shade of ancient trees, where meals are shared and stories unfold by the fire. One of our favourite spots is the camp’s underground photographic hide by the waterhole, which attracts a steady stream of wildlife throughout the day, perfect for quiet observation or a memorable photo or two.
Activities
This is classic walking safari territory. Guided by expert trackers and armed scouts, you’ll explore on foot in the early morning, when the light is soft and the bush is stirring to life. There are also day and night drives available, offering the chance to spot lion, leopard, and wild dog. For something truly special, you can even sleep out under the stars at Mwamba’s Numbu Star Bed platform.
Sustainability
Mwamba is entirely off-grid, powered by solar and committed to leaving the lightest possible footprint. Shenton Safaris, which runs the camp, also works closely with Conservation South Luangwa and Project Luangwa, contributing to snare removal, community education, and rapid-response conservation efforts. They maintain over 120 km of graded roads each dry season which give anti-poaching units rapid access.
