A well-laid out camp offering privacy, comfort and the occasional hippo neighbour!
Location
Murchison River Lodge sits on the southern banks of the River Nile, just outside the southern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park near the Paraa ferry crossing. Surrounded by woodland and open savannah, the lodge overlooks a quiet stretch of the river where hippos and birds are frequently seen. Its location provides convenient access to the park’s main wildlife areas and to boat trips heading towards the dramatic Murchison Falls.
Rooms
Accommodation is varied and designed to suit different travellers. The lodge offers thatched safari cottages, safari tents and family bandas, each positioned to enjoy views across the Nile or surrounding bush. Rooms feature comfortable beds with mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms or nearby private facilities, and private verandas for relaxing outdoors. The cottages provide a slightly higher level of comfort, while the tents offer a more classic safari atmosphere.
Facilities
Facilities include a restaurant, bar and lounge area overlooking the river, creating a relaxed setting for meals and evening drinks. A swimming pool with panoramic views of the Nile is a highlight, providing a refreshing break during warm afternoons. The lodge also features a fire pit, shaded terraces and a small gift shop selling locally made crafts, creating a welcoming and informal safari atmosphere.
Activities
The lodge provides an excellent base for exploring Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area. Guests can enjoy game drives on the northern plains where lions, elephants, giraffes and antelope are commonly seen. Other highlights include boat cruises along the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, birdwatching, nature walks around the lodge and optional fishing excursions on the river. Cultural visits to nearby communities can also be arranged.
Sustainability
Solar energy is used to provide much of the lodge’s power and hot water, helping reduce reliance on generators in this remote setting. The lodge employs a large proportion of its staff from nearby villages and provides training and long-term employment opportunities within the tourism sector. It also works closely with local farmers and suppliers, purchasing fresh produce locally and supporting small community businesses. The lodge is also a corporate member and donor to the Uganda Conservation Foundation, a UK- and Uganda-based organisation working to protect national parks and combat wildlife crime. UCF supports anti-poaching efforts, ranger infrastructure, and conservation programmes across Uganda’s protected areas
