Private stone and thatch lodges with stunning views in the malaria free Amakhala game reserve
Nested on a hillside above the Bushmans River Valley, Woodbury Lodge is a great choice for families and couples seeking solitude in a malaria-free South African game reserve. This four-star lodge is one of our favourites in Amakhala Game Reserve on the Eastern Cape and offers an intimate and peaceful safari experience.
The lodge is family-run and it's the sort of place where people arrive as guests and leave as friends. Each of the private stone-and-thatch guest lodges has a deck with spectacular views out across the plains, so don't be surprised if you've already spotted a herd of elephants and a few giraffes before you've even gone to breakfast. The family, king and twin lodges have air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms and are connected to the main lodge and pool by stone walkways surrounded by indigenous trees full of birdsong. Food here is fresh and homely, and often served in the open-air dining area - a central boma overlooking the reserve. In addition to the three main meals of the day, guests are treated to high tea, sundowners, and warm drinks after an evening game drive. If you're lucky you may even get to experience a traditional South African 'braai" (barbeque).
Safaris here are fun and can be as adventurous or relaxing as you like. The riverine bushveld landscape is home to a diverse range of fauna and flora, including the Big 5 and there are 2 game drives on offer each day. For a different experience, why not try a bush walk, river cruise or even a horseback safari.
