Karenge Bush Camp

A ‘small footprint’ tented bush camp in the national park
Akagera SafarisRwanda· 6 Rooms · $$

A pop-up camp with very low-impact

A truly intimate authentic safari camping experience where you can have a behind-the-scenes tour of the park headquarters

Location: Karenge Bush Camp is set in the remote northern sector of Akagera National Park, one of Rwanda's most exciting conservation success stories. Tucked into the bush near the edge of the Kilala Plains, it offers a real sense of wilderness and space, with few other vehicles around and fantastic opportunities for game viewing. The location shifts slightly each year to reduce environmental impact, but it's always within a prime wildlife zone - making this one of the most rewarding places to stay for those seeking an off-grid safari experience.

Rooms: With just six walk-in canvas tents, Karenge Bush Camp is small, simple, and intimate. Each tent is furnished with twin or double beds, solar lighting, canvas chairs, and open-air bucket showers - designed for minimal impact but maximum comfort. It's classic bush camping, done thoughtfully: you'll fall asleep to the sounds of the wild and wake to soft morning light filtering through the trees. The camp operates seasonally and is unfenced, so expect a real connection to nature throughout your stay.

Amenities: Amenities at Karenge are intentionally pared back to preserve the wild setting. There is no Wi-Fi, no air-conditioning, and no permanent structures - but that is part of the charm. Shared bathroom facilities include eco-flush loos and bucket showers prepared with hot water on request. Meals are cooked on-site and served communally, usually under canvas or out beneath the stars. Despite its simplicity, the camp is well-run and comfortable, with friendly staff and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home in the bush.

Activities: Staying at Karenge is all about experiencing Akagera at its most raw and authentic. Game drives offer the chance to spot elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, and countless antelope species, with birdlife adding an extra layer of interest. The northern sector of the park is known for its open plains and high-density wildlife, so sightings are often excellent. While walking safaris aren't offered directly from camp, guided walks and boat trips can be arranged through the park on request. It's a brilliant option for safari-goers who want to get off the beaten track.

Sustainability: Karenge Bush Camp was designed from the start to be as low-impact as possible. Everything in camp is temporary and removable, with the site chosen to minimise disruption to the landscape and wildlife. The camp operates entirely on solar power, uses eco-flush loos, and follows a strict leave-no-trace policy. Staff are hired locally, and all supplies are sourced from nearby communities wherever possible. It's a great example of how tourism, when done well, can support conservation and community livelihoods while delivering a truly memorable experience.
