Big skies, shifting landscapes, wildlife, and endless adventure
A year-round destination with distinct seasonal shifts, Namibia offers something unique each month - from lush green summers to prime wildlife-filled winters.
Namibia is truly a year-round destination, with each season offering something distinct - from dramatic landscapes to unique wildlife experiences. While weather patterns can influence what’s best to see and do, there’s no single ‘wrong’ time to visit. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect throughout the year to help you plan your trip.
December to March – Green Summers: This is the rainy season, when Namibia’s arid landscapes transform. Occasional downpours bring a burst of life: desert flowers bloom, migratory birds arrive, and plains take on a lush, green hue. While daytime temperatures can be high, rainfall is usually brief and localised, and the scenery is spectacular. Wildlife viewing is still good, particularly for birders, and visitor numbers are lower, making this a great-value time to travel. Lodges often offer stay/pay specials, and roads remain accessible, though travel times may be longer after rain. Note: certain walking trails, such as those in Fish River Canyon, are closed due to heat and safety concerns.
April and May – Autumn Calm: As the rains fade, Namibia enters one of its most visually rewarding periods. The landscape remains tinged with green, wildlife is active, and temperatures are pleasant, warm by day, cool by night. It’s an excellent time for photography, birding and general exploration, with fewer crowds and good road conditions.
June to September – Clear, Cool Winters: This is Namibia’s high season, thanks to clear skies, dry weather and prime conditions for both wildlife and hiking. Mornings and evenings are cold, especially in the desert, so pack layers, but daytime temperatures are ideal. This is the best time for multi-day treks such as the Fish River Canyon hike, which reopens after the summer closure. Game viewing is at its best as water becomes scarce and animals gather around waterholes.
October and November – Warming Springs: Temperatures begin to rise, and the landscape gradually shifts ahead of the rains. Scattered showers may start in November, but they’re typically brief. Wildlife viewing remains strong, particularly in Etosha and the Caprivi Strip. In the south, hiking becomes more limited due to the heat, though shorter walks - especially along the canyon rim - are still possible and pair well with sundowner stops.

January
Namibia’s rainy season is in full swing during January. Expect hot and humid days with temperatures soaring between 30–35°C. Afternoon torrential downpours are common but brief, leaving behind lush, revitalized landscapes. This is a great time for photography enthusiasts to capture dramatic skies and vibrant greenery.

February
Similar to January, February remains hot and humid with afternoon rain showers. The countryside continues to flourish, offering spectacular views of verdant plains. Birdwatchers will appreciate the abundant activity, with migratory species in full display amidst Namibia’s transformed landscapes.

March
Rainfall starts to taper off in March, signalling the transition toward the dry season. Days remain warm, often reaching 30°C, but cooler evenings begin to set in. This is an excellent time to enjoy Namibia's shifting landscapes and witness wildlife starting to return to waterholes.

April
April marks the onset of Namibia's dry season, with little rain and consistently warm days. While the weather remains predominantly dry, occasional showers may still occur. This transitional month offers a mix of green and drying landscapes, making it perfect for hiking and exploring the outdoors.

May
Namibia’s winter season begins in May. Rainfall is rare, and the air becomes crisper with little humidity. Northern regions, like Etosha National Park, showcase vibrant greenery, while wildlife congregates around shrinking water sources. It’s also an ideal time to tackle the Fish River Canyon hike.

June
June brings cooler nights, with temperatures dipping below 10°C and freezing conditions in desert regions. Daytime remains sunny and pleasant, making it a perfect time for safaris. The dry season ensures excellent visibility for game viewing as wildlife frequents waterholes.

July
July is one of Namibia’s coldest months. Nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, especially inland and in the desert. Warm clothing is essential for chilly mornings and evenings, particularly on game drives. The dry season ensures clear skies and excellent wildlife sightings.

August
Much like July, August is characterized by cold nights and frosty mornings. Pack plenty of layers to stay warm on early game drives. With no rain and clear skies, it’s an ideal time to explore Namibia’s stunning landscapes, including Sossusvlei’s iconic dunes.

September
September is often hailed as the best time to visit Namibia. The weather is temperate, with clear skies, low humidity, and minimal wind. Wildlife is highly concentrated around waterholes, making it a superb time for game viewing. Enjoy comfortable days and cooler evenings.

October
October marks the height of the dry season. Daytime temperatures rise to around 29°C, and vegetation continues to fade, enhancing visibility for game viewing. This is a prime month to visit Etosha National Park for unparalleled wildlife experiences.

November
The heat intensifies in November, and humidity begins to rise. Although rain showers become more likely, they are usually brief and refreshing. Wildlife sightings remain excellent, and the landscapes start to show early signs of the upcoming rainy season.

December
December ushers in the first significant rains of the season. The rain breathes life into the landscapes, with greenery returning and animals dispersing as water becomes more plentiful. It’s an exciting time to witness Namibia’s rejuvenation and enjoy dramatic, stormy skies.
