A twelve-room conservation lodge on the Rio Claro, run by the same family since 1997, with guided birdwatching, primate walks and boat safaris.
Location: Whilst most people picture the Amazon as hundreds of miles of unbroken rainforest, Jardim da Amazônia sits right where that forest starts to thin into cerrado, in São José do Rio Claro, about 290km from Cuiabá. The reserve around the lodge has been in the same family's hands for forty years, twenty of them run as a lodge.
Rooms: There are twelve rooms across four different styles, from simple forest suites to the restored stilt-house apartments of the Casa da Fazenda, each with air conditioning, a fan, a minibar and a veranda strung with a hammock. Wi-Fi only reaches the communal areas, which feels about right for a lodge built around watching wildlife rather than a screen.
Amenities: The pool is fed by a natural spring rather than a pump, and meals are full board, built around what the lodge calls Culinária Afetiva rather than a standard buffet. There are lounge areas, a reading corner and Wi-Fi, but nothing that competes too hard with the forest outside.
Activities: Guided birdwatching is the main event, with more than 590 species recorded here, including the critically endangered cone-billed tanager, which draws birders from a long way off on its own. Boat safaris on the Rio Claro and walks along the Jatoba Trail add primates to the list, seven species in all as part of Mato Grosso's own Primate Route.
Sustainability: The lodge was picked as one of 101 authentic experiences under the Feel Brasil project run by Embratur and Sebrae for exactly this kind of low-impact travel. It also runs a research station on site, so a good part of what pays for your stay goes toward the same conservation work you're there to see.
