Lan Ha Bay is Halong Bay’s quieter, more peaceful neighbour – and in many ways, it’s just as spectacular, if not more so. Dotted with limestone karsts, hidden lagoons, and floating fishing villages, this lesser-known bay lies just to the south of Halong but sees a fraction of the crowds. It offers the same surreal scenery, but with a far more tranquil, off-the-beaten-track feel.

What we love about Lan Ha Bay is the chance to slow the pace right down. Cruising here means waking up to misty mornings on the water, kayaking into caves and coves, or swimming straight from your boat in the warm, calm sea. Many tours include a stop on Cat Ba Island too, where you can explore jungle trails, meet local communities, or simply enjoy a quiet beach away from the busier mainland spots.

We suggest opting for an overnight cruise aboard a traditional junk-style boat – ideally with no more than a handful of cabins. It’s an incredibly peaceful way to experience the bay, with excellent service, freshly prepared food, and a front-row seat to one of Vietnam’s most memorable landscapes.
