A secluded lodge in a prime chimp-tracking location
Location
Primate Lodge is nestled within Kibale Forest National Park, one of East Africa’s richest primate habitats. Surrounded by evergreen rainforest and rolling hills, the lodge provides an immersive base for chimpanzee tracking and forest exploration in western Uganda. Its location positions guests right on the edge of pristine wilderness, with immediate access to the forest trails and a natural soundscape of birdcalls and primate calls.
Rooms
Accommodation comprises 15 spacious treehouse‑style cottages, each elevated among the forest canopy with wide windows and private verandas overlooking the surrounding woodland. Rooms are designed in a comfortable safari‑lodge style with en‑suite bathrooms, ample living space, high ceilings and locally inspired furnishings, creating a blend of natural immersion and contemporary comfort.
Facilities
The lodge’s central areas include a restaurant and bar with panoramic views over the forest, outdoor decks and communal lounges for relaxation between excursions, and a fire‑pit area for evening gatherings. Primate Lodge also offers a library and reading spaces, a terrace café, and meeting facilities, all crafted to enhance the forest experience while providing comfortable communal spaces.
Activities
Primate Lodge is the ideal base for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, where habituated troops can be encountered on guided walks through the rainforest. Other activities include guided birdwatching, forest nature walks, community visits to nearby villages, and cultural interactions, as well as educational talks on the forest ecosystem and research initiatives. Night drives and primate conservation talks can also be arranged.
Sustainability
The lodge operates with a low‑impact design, using raised treehouse structures to minimise disturbance to the forest floor and maintain natural water flows. It sources produce and supplies from local farmers, supporting the regional economy and reducing transport emissions. Primate Lodge also contributes to community development projects, including support for local schools and vocational training programmes that create opportunities for young people in the surrounding villages. Guest stays help fund ongoing forest research and conservation activities, supporting monitoring of primate populations and habitat protection in Kibale Forest National Park, where over a dozen primate species depend on intact forest ecosystems.
