A perfect base to start your hiking expedition up the impressive Mount Mulanje
Rooms: The lodge has five bedrooms: two ensuite rooms (one with a double bed in the main lodge, the other in an annex with four single beds), two twin-bed rooms, and one room with four beds sharing a bathroom. All rooms have mosquito nets. A campsite is also available, allowing for more rustic outdoor stays.
Amenities: There’s a large communal lounge and dining area with a generous khonde (porch/veranda) where meals are served. The staff provide set meals; hot meals are also available to campers. Internet is accessible via TNM wireless hotspot. Rock pools nearby make for natural bathing spots.
Activities: Guests can take short forest walks to nearby waterfalls or deep into Mulanje’s trails. Highlights include swimming in rock pools fed by the Likhubula River (such as Dziwe La Nkhalamba & Likhubula pools), and arranging longer day-hikes or overnight hikes up Mulanje Mountain with local guides and porters. Visiting tea and coffee estates is also an option.
Sustainability: Likhubula Forest Lodge supports conservation of the surrounding forest reserve and promotes awareness of the Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust efforts. The lodge operates in a low-impact manner, using local staff, offering camping to reduce its footprint, and encouraging responsible use of natural water sources and forest trails.
Likhubula Forest Lodge is a warm, nature-centred retreat that captures the essence of Malawi’s highlands - perfect for travellers wanting simplicity, scenic beauty and a grounding connection to the land.
