Sumatra Vacations

The wild heart of Indonesia

Whether you're trekking through pristine jungles, observing wildlife, or taking in the serene beauty of Lake Toba, Sumatra promises an extraordinary journey for adventurers and culture enthusiasts alike

Sumatra, the sixth-largest island in the Indonesian archipelago, offers an unparalleled adventure for those who seek to explore untamed wilderness, rich biodiversity, and a unique blend of cultures. From the dense jungles of Bukit Lawang to the serene beauty of Lake Toba, Sumatra promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Indonesia.

One of Sumatra's most iconic features is its lush rainforests and diverse ecosystems. The Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a sanctuary for endangered species like orangutans and tigers. Trekking through the jungles of Bukit Lawang provides a chance to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Sumatra's Kerinci Seblat National Park is the largest national park in Indonesia and is renowned for its biodiversity. It's a haven for birdwatchers, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Sipiso-piso Waterfall, with its 120-meter drop, is a breathtaking natural wonder, surrounded by stunning landscapes.

Sumatra is home to a mosaic of cultures and traditions. The Batak people, living around Lake Toba, have a rich heritage and are known for their unique architecture and distinctive culinary traditions. Experiencing a traditional Batak ceremony is a highlight of visiting the region. The Minangkabau, with their matriarchal society, have a rich cultural heritage that's evident in their dance and music. The beautiful Minangkabau-style architecture can be seen in the royal palace of Pagaruyung.

Lake Toba, located in the northern part of Sumatra, is the largest volcanic lake in the world. It's surrounded by picturesque landscapes and traditional villages. Samosir Island, in the middle of the lake, offers a serene escape and the chance to immerse in local culture. Sumatra invites you to explore its natural wonders through trekking, wildlife encounters, and water adventures. Rafting on the Bohorok River in Bukit Lawang, spotting elephants in Way Kambas National Park, and exploring the Harau Valley are just some of the adventures that await in this diverse and wild island.

Sumatra offers a range of accommodations, from rustic jungle lodges to comfortable hotels and resorts. The island's hospitality and the warm smiles of its people add to the unique charm of your stay.

Wow! These guys are amazing. Can’t recommend them highly enough. Friendly AND efficient! Sorted out our trip (last minute and lots of different family member needs, sorry!) in record time and everything worked like clockwork. Trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara. Will be back (and use F&W again!)!
