If you want to see the great migration, then there's no better base than the Green Camps in the heart of the Serengeti. Popular with couples and families alike, these mobile camping safaris are a superb option for travellers looking for a non-stop safari experience that's a bit wild, authentic and special, in some of the remotest areas of Tanzania.

The Serengeti is the most famous national park in Africa, and the place to go to witness the migration of millions of wildebeest and other plains game. This mobile camp follows the migration as it moves around the Serengeti, ensuring guests are always in the heart of the action.

So at different times of the year, you'll find the camp in different locations:

Naabi Hills Green Camp (December - March)

Southern Serengeti

Between December and March the camp is based at Naabi Hills in the Southern Serengeti. It's here where wildebeest calving usually occurs (mainly during February), as the herd enjoys plentiful grazing on the short grass plains. The camp is set up in the shade of acacia tortilis trees in the heart of the Serengeti wilderness. Nababi Hills is the main entrance to the Serengeti, so it might sound busy, but in fact this large hill is central to the migration, and feels more remote than other camps in the Ndutu area.

The camp features 10 tents with double or twin/triple cosy beds, stylish interiors, a private veranda with chairs and table to enjoy the views, and even an ensuite bathroom with classic safari bucket shower, low-flush composting toilet and hot and cold water. A new special family tent with shared connected walkways is being developed in 2019 too.

The central mess tent with its lounge and library is a great place to relax after your adventures, and delicious 3-course home-cooked meals are rustled up on the open fire and served to your table beneath the twinkling stars. Meals are usually eaten in a sociable communal style where guests can swap stories about their adventures, but private dining areas with their own fire pit and butler can be arranged for special occasions.

Banagi Green Camp (April - June)

Central Serengeti

From April through to June, the mobile camp moves to Banagi in the Central Serengeti, with a stunning wild position close to the Grumeti River. The key feature of this camp is its amazing central location, just half an hour north of the Seronera airstrip. It makes the perfect mid-way stop for guests travelling from the Ngorongoro Crater through to the Northern Serengeti.

Tucked away on the banks of a small tributary of the Grumeti River under the shade of acacia treas, the camp here is comfortable and stylish. The 5 bell tents sleep up to 10 guests in double beds, although triples can be arranged too. All tents have their own ensuite bathrooms with hot water showers. 3-course evening meals are prepared in camp and served by waiters, and although dining is usually communal, private meals can be arranged on request.

The stream has pools of water which attract wildlife all year round. Guests often see herds of wildebeest and zebra passing by whilst sitting in camp!

Kogatende Green Camp (July - November)

Northern Serengeti

The mobile safari camp moves to Kogatende, a beautiful wilderness location in the Northern Serengeti, between July and November. As the herds migrate into the northern areas of the park, they face the dramatic crocodile-infested Mara River crossings, truly one of nature's greatest spectacles to witness, and definitely the highlight of any safari in this part of the Serengeti.

The camp enjoys an enviable location up on a ridge beneath the shade of large evergreen trees, overlooking the plains and just 20 minutes from the Mara River. It's a fabulous spot to watch the perilous river crossings.

Despite its position in the heart of the action, the camp is far enough away from the mainstream park traffic to offer really remote game viewing, and many of the best walking safaris begin here at this camp. There are 10 en-suite tents, and the set-up is the same as for the Naabi Hills Camp.

All the Green Camps operate in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, with low impact energy creation, minimal waste, and limited use of plastic.

The Activities

Days are all about game drives that follow the migration across the great plains of the Serengeti. Vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope put on one of Earth's greatest shows, on their constant quest for food.

However it's not all about the migration. There is lots of other wildlife in the area including the lion, leopard and cheetah that always accompany the migration. Elephant, buffalo and plenty of other plains game are also often spotted, and bird life is excellent too.
