Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse Veranda

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse

Luxury, rustic, gourmet lodge dedicated to sumptuous food

close to Giant's Castle Nature Reserve

We love the unique themed rooms, adding the personal, creative touch to your travels through this mountainous landscape.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is the ultimate in peace and tranquillity, just two hours from Durban. Situated in the Drakensberg Mountains, close to Giant's Castle Nature Reserve, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is ideal for a restful refuge with professional service and most of all a gourmet experience to remember. Cleopatra was bought in the 1940s by the owner, Richard’s, grandfather. He was a pioneer sugar farmer in Empangeni in the heart of Zululand. The original tiny mountain cottage was built around the turn of the century. Following his grandfather’s example, Richard used this as a getaway while running Granny Mouse’s Country House in Balgowan. Once he had sold that, they moved to Cleopatra permanently in 1993 and opened doors in September 1998.

Accommodation comprises of standard, luxury and executive rooms, all uniquely themed and meticulously decorated rooms, with welcome fireplaces and luxurious en-suites. There are also two executive cottages, Swedish naturalist with soft blues and red and Cowboy wild-west themed respectively. All twelve rooms offer spectacular views of the mountains, tea and coffee making facilities with homemade biscuits, snug beds with mohair blankets and crisp cotton sheets. The rate includes 3 gourmet meals daily and dinner is a sumptuous seven course affair with no effort or expense spared to give guests a memorable dining experience. Richard’s food is all about the tastes, fun and the passion that goes into good country cooking!

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse also offer a self-catering River Run Cottage a kilometre from the main house, sleeping four people – offering peace, privacy and solitude. It is surrounded by the World Heritage Site – the Highmoor section of the Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve. Guests over 12 staying in the River Run Cottage are welcome to book meals at the main Farmhouse if there’s space.

Activities include walks (guided on request), horse riding, fishing, golf, cycling, art galleries, winelands, restaurants, anthropological and archaeological tours, bird watching.
